I guess Medicare will import info from the IRS to figure out who needs to pay what. That's not clear to me. I had to really dig to find out they use MAGI instead of AGI.

Yours is a perfect illustration of what I call interpretative confusion (my adjective, of course). You answered the question in the first part of the above. The premium is based upon your individual or joint income tax return. Why did you choose to dig deeper? Could it be that as a former government employee, you inadvertently became part of the problem and overlooked the solution?
