Newbridge Networks Joins Internet2 To Develop Advanced Education And Research Network
$1 million equipment donation helps build new IP service infrastructure
to support next generation applications
HERNDON, Virginia, Oct. 7 /CNW/ - Newbridge Networks today announced that it has joined the Internet2 project as a Corporate Partner, pledging an initial $1 million in networking equipment and technology. Internet2, a nationwide consortium of over 100 universities, government agencies and industry members, is establishing new broadband-based networking capabilities for higher education and research. With equipment and technology from Newbridge Networks and the other Corporate Partners, Internet2 seeks to solve current Internet Protocol (IP) routing issues and create the infrastructure that will adequately support next generation applications such as on-line collaborative research and digital libraries.
''The focus by Newbridge Networks on standards-based technology, Quality of Service (QoS) and end-to-end network and service management is very closely aligned with the project's goals,'' said Mike Roberts, Project Director, Internet2. ''Newbridge Networks brings its leadership in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) wide area networking to the project. Delivery of IP-based services through wide area ATM has an important role to play in developing the next generation broadband infrastructure.''
''Newbridge Networks is very pleased to participate in the important work of defining and delivering next generation IP services and service delivery infrastructure,'' said Mike Pascoe, President, Newbridge Networks, Inc. ''We believe that our focus on standards-based solutions o-end management will bring an important element to the project. The Newbridge MainStreetXpress management suite has created industry leading solutions for advanced private line, frame relay, X.25, and cell relay services which we are now extending to IP services.''
As a Corporate Partner of Internet2, Newbridge Networks strengthens its active efforts in accelerating the availability of new services for the research and education market. With MCI's recent decision to use Newbridge(R) ATM equipment to provide backbone services including the National Science Foundation's Very High-Speed Broadband Service (vBNS), Newbridge Networks increased its participation in the research and education community.
Newbridge Networks is also a founding member of The Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education (CANARIE Inc). CANARIE is an industry-led consortium of private and public sector organizations which is accelerating the development and deployment of next-generation networking technologies, infrastructure and applications. Newbridge Networks industry-leading MainStreetXpress ATM switches form the national backbone of Stentor, an alliance of Canada's carriers. The Stentor network carries commercial internetworking traffic (CA(x)net Canada's Internet network) and the CANARIE ATM research network.
About Internet2
Announced in October 1996, Internet2 has grown from 34 to more than 110 U.S. research universities. Member universities, in conjunction with federal agencies and industry, are developing tools for scientific research and higher education in the 21st century. Network applications will be better served by advanced networking capabilities and new network points-of-presence (PoPs) capable of transmitting gigabits (billions of bits) of information per second.
