He unforgettably registers the simple beauties of life -- the color of peaches, believing in the goodness of another person -- by immersing us in a world so bleak that the appearance of these things seems miraculous. (And they are, but we get numb.) Exactly! It's a reminder that our existence is a beautiful mystery. There is little I would love more than to spend an evening with Mc, inquire about the journey that led him from Orchard Keeper to Blood Meridian to The Road.
