There is probably no good solution to this issue. It will always remain problematic. I had a solo private practice for 25 years, and last year gave it up and took a job as an employee, in a "Hospitalist" group. It is more interesting, more exciting, challenging, etc. In short, it's a change, and I am happy about that. However, I am also learning about the issue from a totally different angle. As an employee, a Dr. is subject to pressures from administrations and various bosses. In my case, I am accustomed to an independent way of thinking... but I can see how a young Doc might be vulnerable to influences applied by experienced people-pushers. And, believe me, as a patient you want your Doctor to have only YOUR interest in mind. People are worried about manipulations coming from drug company reps? Just wait and see what will happen when bureaucrats and bosses start breathing down your doc's back.
