I don't know whether the war contributed. I think maybe it has sucked the life out of our government- but we're still spending at a rocketing rate on crap, so maybe it wouldn't have been done even if there were no war on- it's off budget, after all. John M made the point that people might not care about infrastructure even if they didn't have the war distracting them- I accept that is a valid possibility.

I'm not "avoiding" the substance of the issue. The reason my post was brought over here was because you guys thought I was blaming Bush. Be honest- if I'm not blaming Bush my post has no interest to you, not really. I give you marks for tenacity in spin, but I'm not saying what you think I'm saying, and you could have picked a much better anti-Bush candidate than me.

I don't think either of use knows for sure what other things would have been done if the Iraq war wasn't front and center. I know I don't know how much of our civic life the war has affected. I also know you don't know this either- it is an unknowable. But apparently you don't know you don't know this- since you are willing to state it didn't affect this issue at all- categorically, apparently:

I don't think you can know that. I don't even know how you'd begin to prove it. You can certainly believe it if you want to, but it seems highly illogical.
