Or it could be said that based on the knowledge they had at the time they benefit. They trade one thing for something that they desire more. I might buy a wide screen TV because I prefer the TV to the money it costs, or perhaps I buy some shares of stock because I'd rather have them then the cash. Of course later objective and/or subjective values can change, the stock might go down, I might decide that I overspent for the TV and regret the purchase. But at the time of the purchase I traded something for something I wanted more.
