LOS ANGELES - According to The Hollywood Reporter, “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell is making his way into the movie business.

Cowell will produce a feature film tentatively titled “Star Struck.” His latest venture is inspired by Alan Parker’s “Fame” (1980). A la “American Idol,” the new film is set behind the scenes of a TV singing competition, where 10 contestants climb their way to the top.

“The story is told through the eyes of those 10 contestants,” Cowell told The Hollywood Reporter. “We want it to be the musical version of ‘Rocky’ — an underdog story, a feel-good film.”

Setting the film in the environment of a singing reality show makes the film relatable to audiences, Cowell said.

“‘Fame’ was all about young people wanting to be famous, and in order to do that, they enrolled in a drama school,” Cowell told the trade magazine. “The difference 25 years later is that everyone who wants to be famous today signs up for ‘American Idol.’”

Also taken from the “American Idol” style, the leads in the film will be cast through nationwide open call auditions. Cowell said he hopes to hold the calls early next year in up to eight cities. And he’ll be there for the auditions, he said.
