SIA SAYS AUGUST CHIP SALES ROSE 15% FROM 1996 -- Continued strong sales in the Americas market pushed global semiconductor sales in August 1997 to $11.6B, a 15.3% ($1.5B) increase over August 1996, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association's monthly Global Sales Report. "This marks the fourth straight month of strong year-to-year growth for the semiconductor industry," said SIA President George Scalise. "Despite some seasonal sluggishness in the European and Japanese markets, all indicators suggest the global industry is growing as we start the fourth quarter." The Americas market showed dramatic year-to-year gains, with August 1997 sales over $3.85B, a 21.3% improvement over August 1996 sales of $3.17B. Year-to-year growth in the Asia-Pacific market was 18.5%, and year-to-year growth was 15.8% in Europe and 5.8% in Japan. SIA: 408 436-6600.
