I understand your reaction to the "socialist" pitch, but we can't completely wash our hands of other people's children. It was this approach that got us into our present Public school system mess. It would work much better on a private basis but the way to get there now will be with vouchers. It's going to take decades to get it done because of the entrenched bureaucracy and Teachers Unions, but the system now is so bad, and so expensive, that even the left can't justify it any more. The attitude needs to be, "interfere only when FORCED too."
