Both parties take part in the transaction because they believe they will benefit. That doesn't mean there is no risk. Sometimes people make bad choices.

Oh I see.........they may not benefit......so then, what you originally posted was incorrect; that is, that "an exchange can not occur unless both parties benefit". In reality, with capitalism, an exchange could occur where neither party benefits even if there is no third party present. Maybe that's why we need a third party present at least some of the time.
