I asked the author of the Nortel 1-megabit modem article how this might affect ADSL companies like Amati and Westell. Here is her e-mailed response:

"It could hurt them in the short run, IF Nortel gets the modem manufacturer support it's looking for, and that's a big if. In the long run, chances are this will feed interest in ADSL, which still has a way to go to be mature enough for mass market deployment. Also, ADSL will remain a better option for larger businesses, which want more than 1 Meg access. The Nortel initiative is aimed at the mass market, which won't be able to afford ADSL in its current state for some time."
