I don't think you understood me. The bag of potato chips generates a lot more profit for the corporation that makes it than the apples generate for anyone. The big profit comes with processing.

Thus it only makes sense that the highly advertised foods would be the highly profitable highly processed ones- and that is indeed what we see.

Basically I am talking about the farm to retail spread- which you see has increased every year since 1996, and it's impact on what foods take center stage in advertising, and in shelf space- like those lovely end caps- prime retail space in the super market. If you notice, the more highly processed a product is, the less of the percent of the value of that product goes to the famer, and the more profit goes to the corporation that processes it- like your potato chip. There are few ads for grapes, for example, but lots of ads for cookies that might have a raisin in them. The farmers who grow grapes just don't make the huge profits the big food processors do, and thus they don't plow (pun intended) as much in to advertising. Just like the potato farmers- you'll see a few commercials for potatos, but you'll see hundreds for processed potato chips.
