Unofficial History of WGI. Sorry so wordy.
Back in 93-94, Dianne Feinstein was putting together the Desert Wilderness Protection ACT having previously been floated by her predecessor Alan Cranston. Besides being one of the largest land grabs in the lower 48, it was indeed a well concealed change of how the land would be used! From railroads to mining interests. However the transfer from Santa Fe to Catellus was simply to facilitate this.
The main goal was and is securing the elephantine gold deposits rumored to be southeast of the Salton Sea.
The Joshua Tree National Monument and other areas now upgraded to Natl Park Status were simply a bone tossed to the greens to ease passage of the bill. Who would argue with "wilderness protection"?
Feinstein's contention that these areas needed protection was a plain lie. The area is 98% undeveloped with the sparsest population in CA. Nothing but an occasional abandoned mine or range-cattle ranch every 10-15 miles. Next time we tavel through I'll snap a few pics and see if I can post them for you all. You won't believe how desolate the eastern CA deserts are.
The Chocolate Mtn Gunnery range is near a popular sand dune riding area called Glamis and was used as a jet fighter training area by wings from Yuma, Miramar and 29 Palms. It lies immediately north of WGI's Mesquite property. And that is where the big gold is believed to be. What WGI is mining now is just the periphery of the large "anomaly" mapped by plane-mounted ground penetrating radar and even NASA.
What most don't know is that Feinstein's husband is a man named Richard Blum who also happens to be one of the richest men in CA. He now sits or has sat on the boards of Perini, URS, and Catellus. He has done consulting work in the past for Santa Fe. His companies are some of the largest DOD contractors in existence. Married to one of the seemingly most anti-war senators. Mr. Feinstein and Mrs. Blum (not sure who wears the pants) are about one thing only, making money. He's a corporate land shark, she's a powerful law-making senator. Could you ask for a better money-making machine?
The true purpose in my mind for establishing the Desert Wilderness Protection ACT was to keep out any and all competition for the gold. The Act doesn't stop existing mines, only prohibits NEW mines. However keeping the claims (and permits for ranchers) current is proving to be impossible (by design?) for everyone. So mines and ranches are closing. A once sparsely populated area is now almost uninhabited. The Mesquite mine has not had such problems w/permitting.
Often when pubic lands (like the Gunnery Range) are no longer wanted by the govt. they are transferred to the private sector. The right of first refusal usually goes to property owners whose land is adjacent to the property in question. This often happens with mining claims. Good news for WGI!
Are the Feinsteins still connected with WGI? Have they been paid in full for facilitating this deal? Don't know and don't care. What I do know is there is no way in Hell I wouldn't own a boatload of stock in the only company allowed to mine in those hills.
Thanks for the invite Tom.
Have a great week all, Jolie
