NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Bear Stearns Cos. (BSC) has filed for bankruptcy protection in the Cayman Islands for its two hedge funds, CNBC's Charles Gasparino reported Tuesday.

Gasparino said the bank is filing overseas to avoid a U.S. bankruptcy judge who recently ruled against them in a case about its brokerage of a hedge fund.
