The pressure comes from the lobbyists who outnumber lawmakers and provide campaign contributions in big chunks from interest groups. If we could do two things, we could change the US for the better immediately: 1. 100% publicly funded campaigns. 2. Single-payer health care The inane, thoughtless and reckless 'privatization' of things has created a huge mess in the US. Iraq is largely a privately-run enterprise and, instead of being more efficient and effective as privately run enterprises supposedly should be, it is a hugely expensive fiasco. It is time to end the Reagan spawned era of doltish, unworkable policies and get back to building a country for the benefit of all. We are in deep, deep ****. We have a zero or negative savings rate and healthcare is headed towards being 20% of GDP even though it is mediocre. If people didn't have inflated stock portfolios and housing prices, people would be more frightened.
