Just a comment on California.

I grew up in California and took kids all through the Sierra teaching them climbing and ecology (new word then-lol) in a work study program which helped pay my way through college.

I know the area you speak of well. Very unique area which feeds huge flocks of migrating birds who eat the brine shrimp in the salt lakes. Salt lakes, like mono lake, whose water level has been dropping precipitously as they cut off the water sources and this threatens the food source of 10's of thousands of birds.

I left california in the late 60's because TOO MUCH of the state is in private hands (with lots of no tresspassing signs posted) and it would take an all day drive from the Bay Area just to find some open fields I could walk-in.

Now I live next to the Tongass National forest (which comprises a large amount of Souteast Alaska and I can walk, fish and hunt anywhere I want, whenever I want.

I would have liked to see the entire Sierra (too delicate and precious)and Redwoods (almost extinct) put in national parks, so our children and their children can enjoy them.

PS, I love Diane Feinstein. And Barbara Boxer even more-lol.

Cheers,
