wbmw,

I'm guessing my figure of 60 good die per wafer was a lot closer than parasa's figure of >300. That said, it probably is slightly better than 60 when you take cache redundancy into account. Of course, you can't assume the cache is immune to defects... just those which occur in blocks that can be spared with redundant cells. Does that change my conclusion...? Probably not.

As far as yield, in addition to some redundancy in cache (which can prevent a defect from ruining the entire chip), AMD may be selling some QC as DC (getting some revenue from otherwise worthless chip. Another area of the Barcelona is area covered by I/O, that is very likely more resilient than the cores. It has larger transistors, clocked at lower speeds.

The less-than symbol?

I think Petz is referring to defect density being less than X (from some AMD comments), not equal to X.
