"China threatens" HA! We are supposed to think they won't do it at some point, regardless? I say better take the medicine now than later. Perhaps, I have more confidence than most that America will find it's way through the resulting mess. America may do some stupid things on occasion (Vietnam, Iraq ...), but it has always been the case that the rest of the world underestimates the will and capacity of Americans to get something done when the entire population is actively and forcefully behind the endeavor.
