<<The big problem in the US is a very distorted image on how to consume and live propagated by the all pervasive media and popular culture, compounded by innumeracy in most of the population>>

... yeup. I think pop culture propagated by TV is exceedingly destructive, especially of the young.

I suppose the education on savings must start early.

Our daughter has so far not walked through a department or toy store, and has not asked for purchases other then (i) books, (ii) DVDs, (iii) matchbox cars, and (iv) chocolate-filled croissants.

We have been teaching her about filling her piggy bank with coins on regular basis, and telling her that one day she can buy dada a meal with the savings. She is not into TV at all, and in fact stops me from watching my DVDs by demanding that I read to her instead.
