Nokia Turns to STMicro for Chips

LONDON -- Nokia Corp., the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, Wednesday said it will discontinue parts of its own chipset business and form a partnership with semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics NV to develop third generation phone technologies.

The shake-up of its chipset strategy is expected to reduce Nokia's reliance on its current supplier Texas Instruments Inc., with greater competition in the broadband wireless semiconductor market potentially lowering prices the Finnish mobile maker has to pay.

Some 200 Nokia employees in Finland and the U.K. are expected to transfer to STMicro, as the companies team up to design 3G chipsets and modem ...
