My husband is tenth of ten kids and my 89 year old mother-in-law gave checks to all of 'em. I was over there the other day because she finally agreed to let us put in a first floor powder room (after two broken hips) so we all didn't have to stay awake nights worrying about her climbing stairs to go to the bathroom.

While I was there, she told me what everyone was going to spend the money on (people had trips, new furniture, cars and whatnot that they bought with the gift) and then asked me what we did with ours. I told her we put it in the bank and then she clearly wasn't satisfied with that answer so I said, "Well we're really using it for our new kitchen, so I guess we can all start to call the kitchen the Nell Memorial kitchen." She liked that answer a lot better. She's got little connection to current prices at this point so she doesn't know 12k doesn't really go far in a kitchen redo of the scale we've taken on (even with us doing the work).

John's the kind of guy who is happier with money in the bank than a new anything but clearly his mother wanted us to spend it even though she's at that age where she doesn't spend money on anything. We got her to do the powder room by convincing her it would only cost $500 (we covered the rest among us). Her kids would do well to adapt a little more of her saving nature and she would do better if she took on their spending propensity and spend a little on herself.
