For the simple reason they [the American people] don't want to think the "unthinkable" thought -- that the US government could actually kill Americans in cold blood or even be party to it. That's why, not being an American, it's easier for me to address the reality of what took place.

That Paul Roberts, not only an American but someone formerly in the US government, is prepared to think the "unthinkable" thought and then say so out loud is an indication of his disaffection with the present administration. And he also knows that by doing so he is alienating himself from the government and will be regarded as a traitor by many Americans.
