I'm well aware of that component. I'm also well aware that genetics is a very significant factor of what makes really outstanding specimens.

Of course, I could point out that hunters are a little brain dead for not being able to allow most bucks to reach a reasonable age before killing them. Kind of like a kid who can't wait for dessert?

That is another reason why non-extractive methods of population control could easily do better than hunting. Hunted populations have a very high skew towards only young animals. A natural population would have older animals who have gained skill with age. It is much more difficult to gain skill against long range rifles and ATVs.
