My experience with small town politics is limited, but I did notice that party affiliations - and party platforms, for that matter - do not mean quite as much. This makes sense - local politicians will not be deciding major national issues. People seem to go more by how they "feel" about a particular candidate.

Btw, I'm just curious, Is your father interested in politics? Does he like to talk about it? Because if he does, he may actually have good - independent - reasons for being a Republican.
