Sorry, really just meant to use my recent experience as a real-world example of how these long-short plays may feel less risky, but when the expected relationship between them breaks down, you can really get slammed. I've been trading and studying pairs trades/relative strength trades for a few years now, and I'm pretty convinced that it is pure gambling.

And I sure don't see any relationship between the S&P and gold that I would bet on:
