Maybe, maybe not. You need enough buying power to build flagging positions, even open new ones.

That's a wide range. Plenty of room for gain and pain both. I imagine diversification helps offset overall portfolio volatility. Personally, I'd have a hard time buying something that's down, say, 30% more than the S&P.
