"VMware's clients include every firm in the Fortune 100 and more than 84% of the Fortune 1,000; yet analysts believe there is an enormous untapped market for virtualization.

Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.'s technology analysts estimate VMware has grabbed 85% of the market share for virtualization and its technology is about five years ahead of its competition. Yet less than 4% of the most prevalent type of servers were virtualized by the end of 2006, an amount that could rise tenfold by 2015, they forecast.

Indeed, the company's preliminary results for the first half of 2007 project that total revenue grew 95% to $555.5 million, while net income more than doubled to $75.3 million, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Last week, the offering's expected price range was boosted by $4 a share.

Data-storage company EMC Corp. purchased VMware in 2004 for $625 million. If the offering is sold at the midpoint of its $27 to $29 range, VMware will have a market value of $10.5 billion tomorrow. Including an overallotment that is expected to be exercised, EMC is selling just 10% of the company to the public."
