How does the pro know when to get out of a good stock?

For example today, both MSFT and INTC were both up more than $2 each and there should be no reason for them to go back so I kept them. After lunch I come back to see them up just around $1 only. Why didn't I sell when they were 2 ahead?

I have previously tried making stop-losses, but it seems they are triggered quite randomly, and you often end up selling without any apparent dive in the price.

What I mean is, is there a rule-of-thumb when to take your win and go to another table (stock) or should I stay at my terminal all day?

Hints most appreciated!
