Dyson's support of Gold is in excellent agreement with his carping on global warming. Both illustrate that he can ignore irrefutable evidence, and cling to an unsupportable idea.

It might well be the case that some or even a lot of methane is produced by abiotic processes. However, Gold claimed that oil was produced this way as well, and the abiotic oil quest is ever hopeful of finding some. I think Gold got Sweden or Norway to actually sink a pretty deep hole looking.

The mountain of evidence however is the following. Oil is always found in association with geologic rock formations of prior life. Assume that Gold is proven correct about abiotic oil formation. You would now have the astonishing problem of showing why this abiotic oil always magically goes around looking for rock formations of biological origin to hang out in.

You see the same lack of thinking repeated over and over again by global warming deniers. They are always sure that the next savior (sun spots, cosmic rays, bla bla) will somehow prove that all the existing science is somehow bunk. Hence you read where paper XX has shown that solar cycles can account for all the warming in the last century. The problem with this approach is that IF it were true, you would also have to explain why the other very well observed components are now suddenly in error by so much. The effects of greenhouse gases, are basic physics. They are not going away.
