William Miller was not into it for financial gain. People sold everything and they stood together in a field waiting for the second coming of Christ. When his first prediction was not fulfilled, he told them it would be the next year (or something like that) and a smaller number gathered their then. After his third prediction failed to materialize the movement splintered.
