The possibility is real and by far not as remote as it seemed.

How else can one explain why European banks essentially stopped supplying funds to each other (and US banks), a day to day business which they do for a century and counting, other than they stopped trusting their neighbour?

It reminds me on the past failures in the grid: one weak link fails and others are overcharged and fail to deliver too. But at least, the banks have a central bank.
