This is exactly my fear about gold - I am a goldbug with growing doubts and anxieties. We are having a credit crisis and gold goes down, while oil goes up. Maybe the gold market is just too small and obscure to serve as an alternative to fiat money. What other substance is universally valued, fungible, transportable, storable, etc? Oil of course! Maybe the next reserve currency will be the BTU?
