If so, then they don't understand pragmatism at all. It is quite likely that none of the various ideological position are pragmatic.

"Maybe the balance they found was a really good balance, maybe it was just better than what they had before, but going further (or not going quite as far) would have been better."

Maybe. As they admit, mistakes were made. But, they have been in a position of the economy growing at a rapid clip for many years now. The only thing holding them back at the moment is the lack of people with the proper skill set. So it is hard to see how it could have been better.
