Somewhere it got forgotten that it was only in the last century that the US and the European powers saw eye-to-eye and that was mostly because of Communism. In the latter half of the 19th century, "pulling the lion's tail' (tweaking Britain) was a favorite sport of American politicians to please the Irish immigrants who were anti-British. Trade war with Britain was constant throughout the century. There was an undeclared naval war with France in the 1790's.

Now we have merely gone back to our historical pattern of rivalry with Europe. (Liberals: Hint- -You're cheering for the enemy!)
