More: UTSI and the Beijing Olympic

PR Newswire reports: UTStarcom, Inc. (NASDAQ UTSI), a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, today announced that the company's award-winning RollingStream(TM) end-to-end IPTV solution currently supports more than 310,500 live subscribers in 19 commercial deployments with both China Telecom and China Netcom with a total system capacity of nearly 625,000 subscribers between the two operators.

'More than 60 percent of all commercial IPTV subscribers currently in China today are using UTStarcom's RollingStream end-to-end IPTV solution,' said Brian Caskey, vice president of worldwide marketing for UTStarcom, Inc. 'Operators prefer RollingStream because of its highly distributed, streaming-based architecture; its proven ability to reliably scale to support multimillion subscriber deployments; and its flexibility to enable service providers to offer additional value-added services including video telephony, SMS/MMS and other potential revenue-generating services beyond IPTV applications that help speed their return on investment.'

According to a recent IDC report titled 'China IPTV 2007-2011 Forecast and Analysis' released in March 2007, the APeJ (Asia/Pacific excluding Japan) region is the most rapidly growing IPTV region in the world with the largest equipment market share. IDC predicts that APeJ will have 29.7 million IPTV users by 2010. Within the APeJ region, China is the most promising IPTV market with forecasts of approximately 10.5 million subscribers by 2010 and 14.9 million by 2011.

'With respect to commercial use, from Harbin, the first city of IPTV commercial use in China in May 2005, to IPTV commercial use in Shanghai in September 2006, the UTStarcom RollingStream system is undoubtedly the most mature IPTV system for commercial use in China by the end of 2006,' the report states. 'In addition, its close cooperation with content operators such as Shanghai Media Group also helps it gain advantages in the equipment market competition.'

At ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong in December 2006, UTStarcom's RollingStream IPTV solution was selected the best IPTV solution worldwide by Communications Weekly, a leading publication under the guidance of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) in China. UTStarcom was also awarded the Development Contribution Award for its efforts for IPTV standardization in China.

Additional comment: IPTV may become a highly contested technology in China coinciding with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
