I drove my Dodge RAM, which is a 3/4 ton diesel. Volunteers at Salmon Mountain Lookout drive to the trail head in cars from both ends, so I think your Expedition would be fine. Don't try to go up to Burnt Knob Lookout like I did, though. You need a jeep or high base 4x4 for that. The main thing is start with a full gas tank at the beginning. That would fillup at Elk City on the West and Darby on the East. They don't allow earth firsters at Elk City. There's a sign on the restaurant/snowmobile supply/gas station store to that effect.
