THORNBURG MORTGAGE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE of why investors should carefully examine fundamental trends before using insider signals to buy stock.

Over the past month, insiders at the jumbo residential-mortgage lender (for loans over $417,000) collectively made their largest open-market purchases ever based on Thomson Financial data dating back to 1993.

Seven senior executives and directors plunked down more than $13.3 million to purchase 528,700 Thornburg shares from July 25 through Aug. 7, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Shares were each acquired at per-share prices ranging from $21.69 to $26.72.
