Officer fined $1,000 for theft of video disc MICHELLE CHIN ÿ 10/07/97 South China Morning Post Page 9 (Copyright 1997) ÿ A detective was yesterday found guilty of stealing a Canto-pop VCD from a music shop. Li Yiu-fai was branded a liar by Eastern Court magistrate Julia Livesey over his claims that he rushed out of the HMV store in Causeway Bay to use his mobile phone. The conviction means the end of his 12-year career, the court heard. Plain-clothes security guard Chak Chi-leung told how he followed Li and saw him hide the Leslie Cheung disc inside his shirt - after removing the plastic wrapping. Mr Chak informed two other guards after the detective walked out of the shop without paying. Li, 30, was stopped and brought back to the HMV staff room, where he revealed his job and begged to be released, Mr Chak said. Yesterday, the detective denied stealing the $115 VCD on May 23. He said he was holding the disc in his hand as he left the shop to call his superior. He claimed the VCD had not had a plastic wrapping, making him assume it was a sample for in-store listening. He tried to find a player to test the disc, but ended up forgetting to pay for it. Ms Livesey fined Li $1,000 and ordered him to pay $1,000 costs.
