What is cost of cheap toys?


If my memory serves me, I believe that all these companies that used to make items in the U.S. decided to close up shop in America and take their business to foreign countries in order to benefit from the cheaper labor and land prices.

So how many sick and injured children does it take before the cost-benefit analysis dictates that we should bring our corporations back to U.S. soil? Or will that ever happen? I would pay twice the price for a toy made in the USA. I hope someone gets a clue and realizes that we are ready to see Made in USA labels again. Maybe the U.S. doesn't always get it right, but we are reinventing the wheel overseas. As a country we made strides to ensure lead poisoning and other hazards were stopped.

Now someone is realizing that "Oh, by the way, while we were paying you 20 cents to make a toy we'll sell for $40, we forgot to mention that you gotta make the product safe." Give me a break — I guarantee you that someone's pockets are lined because his/her company made a huge profit while cutting costs. Wall Street paid out huge bonuses to all these folks that are now being fired because, oops, we didn't foresee that whole sub-prime mortgage fiasco approaching meltdown. Get with it, corporate America — greed can't run this country for much longer. We are paying a hefty price because the bottom line is all we can see.
