IMO, the terms "fundamentalism" or "fundamentalist" applied broadly to any and all religions is meaningless. What that term means depends of the "fundamentals" of the religion in question.

The only purpose in purporting to compare "fundamentalist" Christian "religions" to "funadamentalist" Islam is to neutralize the latter and make it appear less threatening to the masses, while at the same time, heightening negative perceptions of the Christian fundamentalists. It's just another alleged documentary designed to proselytyze.

If she wanted to explore the extremes in each religious group, she would be focusing on Islamofascists, which doesn't appear to the case....or her purpose.

I would be mightily surprised if the actual piece proved me wrong.

Portraying Islamofascists as "moms and dads" (ala Rosie O'Donnell) or comparing them to fundamentalist Christians
is just another way of humanizing the enemy in order to undermine the notion of a war on terror.

The problem here is not a lapse in "critical thinking" by the targets of the pieces. The problem, imo, is a lack of "critical analysis" by the targets of the brain-washing.

<edit>

I neglected to add that one must also consider the source when applying "critical thinking". Amanpour is a hack, not just in my opinion, but in her own words: "There are some situations one simply cannot be neutral about, because when you are neutral you are an accomplice. Objectivity doesn't mean treating all sides equally. It means giving each side a hearing." en.wikipedia.org
