You talked to one veteran. That's not even much in terms of an anecdote, let alone serious evidence of your larger claim. And I'm not sure how "specifically" it was. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't really think that a WMD attack on the US was do in 2003 if we didn't invade (another way to express what "imminent" would mean). Even if he really believed it the general statements from the administration would not have given him any reason to, and its likely that most of the soldiers who took part in the operation did not at that time think Saddam was likely to attack the US with WMD "any day now".
