but the thorniest issue to avoid is religious incompatibility, especially if you plan to have kids.

That's still the major one. Although less and less as our society becomes more secular. My kids got raised secular, and my only regret is that they don't know the Bible as literature. It's hard to understand a lot of our literature, Art, etc, if you don't know the Bible.
