Bush-Cheney totally failed in Iraq and are very dishonest about as well. The "good news" you hear is because Bushies are cutting deals with their enemies in Iraq, something they swore they'd never do. They are also massive payoffs happening, huge corruption, stolen oil, paying Sunnis to help kill Al Qaida fighters who came into the country after Bush dared them to. Maybe the Saudis are contributing. But it's a mess because we can't choose sides and both sides are equally noxious. That's why there are less attacks on us, though there are still plenty. The other day was the biggest attack of the year.

CNN's top reporter in Iraq spelled it out clearly. Bushies are finally talking to the former Baathists they demonized and are bringing them into the fold. But this is terrifying the Shiites. So it's still civil war central. Multiple civil wars actually, plus Bush has created a huge menace in Iran. If this were a small country we could sustain a police presence, but it's a huge country with open borders and we're out of troops, money and energy to hold it together.

Plus we may be the biggest destabilizing influence of all. Our presence has both powerful negative and positive effects, and the whole problem is one Bush created in the first place. Love him or hate him, Saddam held that crazy country together and kept the lights on and water running.

Most tragically, saving Iraq is now impossible. Its 2 million smartest people have fled plus another million poor refugees who have nowhere to go and nothing to do. THose rufugees are the types Al Qaida recruits. Because they have nothing to lose. And because Bush promised them freedom and gave them hell instead.
