Patents have limited life even if they are renewed. Should QCOM split the company, will the licensing department be an attractive investment since they have to keep inventing new patents. How far in the future can this entity rely its revenues from royalties? Is there another company - in the US which has royalties as a significant portion of its revenues - that we can compare QCOM to? If QCOM is unique its strength could also be its weakness as evident from being a target of various legal arrows.
