Actually I do not know the answer to my question. I just have a bunch of bullion coins weighing down a safe deposit box, which I bought at odd intervals and from various people, and once in a while I think maybe I ought to use them for some purpose. Hardly anyone seems to be able to say, "Well, I took 10 Maple Leafs into the bank in Charlottetown, PEI, and exchanged them for an account denominated in Canadian dollars and paid for our motel and lobster dinners." Or "I went around the corner in Hong Kong and bought a suit with my Kruggerrands."

Whereas I can say: "I took my five-year-old Citibank euro travelers checks to a branch of BNP in Paris on the Boulevard Haussman, presented the checks and my passport, and they gave me my money without deducting any fees at all."
