don't think it [slavery] works for every circumstance in history and there are lots more heinous things going on in the world today than one person being subject to another, lacking any overt evidence of oppression or brutality.

I hope I don't read into your comments a faint apology for slavery. There is certainly an avoidance/minimization of it as clearly there are more heinous things, such as child abuse, murder, etc., but that is not the subjct. Slavery is the subject and it is always, without exception, wrong.
