It occurs to me that there might even be an ethical element in having the ability to diagnose/and appropriately treat a patient in a shorter time periond, and not utilizing that ability. Perhaps part of the reason why the Dr.'s nurese is so busy, is because she's requesting, handling samples, and re-contacting the patient to provide results of lab tests-or set up another appointment to discuss the results! Another ethical issue, would be, if it is cheaper for the patient to take a rapid diagnostic test- why make he/she or the insurance provider pay more. If independent physicians don't contribute to reducing such costs the HMO' will continue to flourish and change the Dr./patient relationship.
