"A trillion plus might be the eventual cost in Iraq"

No "might" about it. Unless you don't want to restore the military back to the shape it was before the war and/or refuse to provide medical for those who have been disabled so far. Depending how much longer we stay and what happens, it could go higher. Much higher.

"If you include eventual and indirect costs for a very strong enforced anti-global warming effort the cost could be quadrillions (world wide, not adjusted for inflation, long time period, including lost compounding on investments that would have been made with the money), or with more normal time frames (say within a decade) could easily be many trillions, far greater than Iraq. "

Sure. And a solid diamond meteorite could slam down in my backyard. Or all the atoms in my body could vibrate up at the same time, causing me to shoot into the sky. Such things could happen, but they don't have to. Such scare tactics(it will cost quadrillions! We can't afford it!) is just FUD. No one is proposing such a thing, except for those who are opposed to doing anything. A hard upper bound is about $20 billion. For that we could put a giant fresnel lens in orbit to attenuate sun light enough to counter-act any warming. And it is perfectly feasible.

It might be a good idea to do that anyway.
