The spouse can work, two $43k incomes gives a household income of $86k, is that also pathetic for a family of four in your opinion?

I wasn't talking about the kids working. Additional income from that would probably be minor (although it could make some difference).

Than you don't have a family of four do you?

you need to start looking at why things are the way they are and what can be done to improve them.

The best way to cure incomes not be as high as we would like them to be is continued economic growth. A lot of the interventions you propose do more to get in the way of that than to help it out.
