Elroy...i dont think anyone here is in a position to make the cultural judgements being made on the basis of one or two articles about one person.
We can make whatever judgement we want, and if it's based on only one or two articles, then the likelihood that the judgement is wrong is higher than if it is based on complete knowledge of the situation.
Nevertheless, in general an old man marrying and then divorcing multiple wives 40 years younger than him is wrong, in my opinion. He's a selfish man, his affect on the women is negative, and there's a major flaw in the culture/society that allows that type of behaviour. THE PERCENTAGE OF 20 YEAR OLD WOMEN THAT ARE GOING TO WANT TO SPEND THEIR LIVES AS "WIFE" #15 TO A 70 YEAR OLD MAN IS 0.000001%. The only reason it's not zero is Anna Nicole Smith! :-) I have no direct knowledge of that guy, but my hunch is that he is buying poor Yemeni village girls to be his next "wife", and the girls are better described as his next "concubine/maid" than wife.
And I don't see what is the big deal about making a judgment about people of "other cultures". If he legally raped some Yemeni village girls regularly, we'd say that's wrong. If he forbade them from learning to read and write, we'd (hopefully) say that's wrong. Just because it is something that is happening amongst a group of people that are not us, why is it not allowed for me to have a view on their actions?
"...if america were to be judges on such a news item.we would be damned on a daily basis and mickey rooney would be rotting in hell.
Well, the judgment isn't black and white. Just because I think that old man is shame on his culture/society doesn't mean I think everyone in Ajman is a loser. It's an aspect of their culture that should be changed, and if it is changed they will have improved, but if it isn't changed that doesn't mean I think the entire population of that area is going to hell. |
